Open Thread

Which of your wife's mansions are you heading to this weekend?

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

After watching the opening ceremonies, my wife said, "I fear China."

I said, "You should... they will rule the world in 50 years... and it was the United States who built them up as a superpower."

Corporate greed has sowed the seed to our destruction... thanks, right wingers!

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

A changing balance of power doesn't have to be a bad thing. Well, I guess it always has been, but maybe this time will be different!

In fact, dramatic shifts in global power distribution have virtually always coincided with major wars. But, lucky for us, China's rise is deeply tied into the global economy. To engage in any serious military conflict would undermine their entire mode of development, setting them back decades. And that is a reality recognized by Chinese leadership and codified in their policy of a "peaceful rise".
That's probably the greatest byproduct of a global economy - wars become far, far more expensive to wage.

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

It would be one thing if China were democratic nation, but they are a totalitarian one... and their influence is spreading.  They are heavily investing in Africa and other third world nations to build their infrastructure.  They will have HUGE influence in the world, and not a benevolent one...

Re: Open Thread (2.00 / 1)

Communist rule has only began to loosen in the last generation. How many generations did it take the US to abolish slavery? I'd give them a little more time and a little more credit. The Western world has only fully embraced Democracy in the last 50 years. Much of the rest of the world is still struggling to establish and maintain democracy. They are just behind the curve by a few decades, which is not unexpected considering the way the Western world treated them for most of the 20th century.

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

Sadly, LordMike

For all the democratic ideals we hold dear, this nation has almost been taken over by a form of theocratic driven totalitarianism our founding fathers could never have imagined.

And the forces of evil are still hard at work, running another easily manipulated puppet and using all their still remaining nefarious infiltrations into every corner of influence to enhance their continued march to a hoped for victory.

Obama had better win in November or we can all kiss the Constitution and every one of its attached amendments goodbye. These criminals working against Obama want nothing short of replacing our democracy with something even worse than what the Chinese are running.

Why Fear? (none / 0)

It makes no sense.  The world will shift.
Eat the Kung Pao and enjoy it.

So it goes.
The opening ceremonies were AWESOME.

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

I think Democratic administrations had a hand in furthering China trade. The Bushies just didn't do their part to make sure it was fair.

It seemed like that, or an eventual war.

The DLC'ers and the Republicans share equal blame...  unfair trade destroying our country while building up a totalitarian one...  Smart politics... not!

McCain's stupid ass "celebrity" ad aired about half an hour ago.

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

Ok, so he's doing attack ads... I figured he'd be classless about it...  No Obama commercials that I've seen... not cool!

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

Well, maybe it is an issue of class - it's sort of tasteless to air an attack ad in the middle of the opening ceremonies.

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

Yeah, but sadly, I bet he gets a boost from it...  It seems that being classy hurts you in politics...

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

I don't think that will keep happening. The "celebrity" thing isn't the kind of thing that people give a shit about. If anything, it makes Obama look really good when put in comparison with Obama's Green ad.

Tom Daschle confirmed that the celebrity (none / 0)

ad was effective and the reason for Obama's downturn - as for Lieberman, you can thank Obama who took him as his mentor and gave his campaign $14,000 to run against Lamont and also campaigned for him!

Re: Tom Daschle confirmed that the celebrity (none / 0)

No, the downturn was due to issues with energy policy. Disagreements about oil drilling and thinking Obama didn't have a plan. People didn't just jump onto the GOP bandwagon because they came up with a word, one that doesn't fit as an attack phrase. Obama fights off that label with two simple words when he is tired of it: "Thank you!" This is like those pushing the "bush is stupid" meme. Obama's confidence is a net plus if people evaluate that he's competent.

Besides that, what the hell good is it whining about not getting press coverage when you use all your press coverage talking about Obama?

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

The Washington Post has confirmed, via a story by Howard Kurtz and Lois Romano, that the claim that Hunter was being sent money every month was true.

The source of this money is John Edwards' campaign finance chairman this year and in 2004:

Fred Baron, a Texas lawyer who was the finance chairman of Edwards's two presidential campaigns, in 2004 and this year, said in an interview that he has been sending unspecified sums of money to Hunter without informing Edwards. The payments helped Hunter relocate from North Carolina to a $3 million Santa Barbara home and helped Andrew Young -- a former Edwards aide who claims to be the baby's father -- move into a $4 million home in the same city. Edwards said he was unaware that money was being funneled to his former aides.

In a recent story titled "EDWARDS' HU$H MONEY TO MISTRESS", the National Enquirer put the monthly amount at $15,000.

I hope donations to Edwards weren't used for shady purposes.

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

My wife has decorated her three different "mansions" during the course of our twenty-six year marriage: Our home, Our Bedroom and My Doghouse.

I've slept in all three for some periods of time over the years and I must admit that I've found each one has a unique benefit.

Ssssshhhhh. Looking like Our Bedroom this weekend.

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

I don't know why anyone is even afraid of China. The country is nothing more than cheap labor. Their environmental standards are pitiful, lack of freedom, human rights disaster, and a aging population. How many successful Chinese companies are there? Contrast that with American companies. America kicks ass, and unless we suddenly start electing more Republicans all of a sudden, we are going to stay that way. GO USA!

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

China is slowly but surely building up some competitive multinationals. But for the most part business in China is controlled (or at least dependent upon) Western interests.

Taking a broader, more long term view, I think we need to accept and facilitate China's rise. If we just stick our heads in the sand and chant "America is #1" we will find ourselves owned by them in a few decades. China, and maybe India, will be our partners as dominant world powers within our lifetimes. It is in everyone's interest that we develop better relationships with them than we did with the Soviet Union. A multipolar world, though historically unstable, has the potential to benefit us and them thanks to our interwoven interests. The only alternative is conflict, which would be economically devastating and could, potentially, lead to an astronomical loss of human lives.

Reporting from a Dem woman's mansion (none / 0)

I think its time for my party to begin recognizing the true source of its own power - here in my mansion and the mansions of all Dem women.

Re Edwards, enough is enough. We are the pary of women and knowing that makes us stronger.

Re: Open Thread (1.00 / 1)

Democracy is overrated. China is a nation of 1.4 billion people.
It has found a system that works for it and the results to show for it. Some of the best managed countries in the world have 'firm rule' look at Singapore. What is important is the policy and the efficency of rule.
